‘mu:kaumedia presents an idiot’s guide how to start blogging
Start Blogging: Step 1
Decide why you want to do it.
Here are some good reasons (make sure you know which applies to you before you start)
• Raise your business profile in Google • Have a website that you’re in control of • Save money • Make money • Communicate with your employees and customers • Create a niche site for your Fawlty Towers obsession • Sell things • Share your memoirs • Create a site for your group or club • Promote a time-limited product or event
Start Blogging: Step 2
Sign up for one of the following:
• WordPress.com (free blog, free hosting, limited functionality, easy to use, get going today) • WordPress.org (free blog software, need your own hosting, vast amount of functionality, more complex) • Blogger.com (free blog, easy to use, not as ‘professional-looking’ in my opinion, smaller developer community) • TypePad.com (monthly fee, easy to use, professional features)
Start Blogging: Step 3
Learn the following to get the most out of your blog:
• How to create posts and pages • How to insert text and images into posts and pages • What keywords are and how Google search works (so you can write your posts and pages with Google in mind) • Some very basic HTML to add extra graphic links and text links to your sidebars
Start Blogging – basic guidelines
Just do it. Get started, make mistakes, experiment and see what works and what doesn’t. Try writing keywords into your posts and pages, then leave it a day and see where you rank in Google for those keywords.
Watch your stats to see what Google brings you in response to what you wrote. And remember, if you go looking for something in Google but can’t find it then consider it an opportunity for you to fill the information vaccuum yourself.
Photobucket is a useful free online tool for hosting the images you put in your blogs.
