How do I get a Spotify invitation?

Aaah..once again, you need a Spotify invitation sob*

Sadly, on or about the 18th Jan 2010 Spotify closed the back door that allowed you to create a free account without need for an invitation.

During this time, probably close to 200,000 people came through this site looking for a free, ad-supported Spotify account. Some of those people were from outside the countries supported by Spotify but the majority will have successfully created a free account. And of those, a healthy percentage will go on to sign up at some point for a Spotify Premium account.

So, it is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you I can no longer help you get set up with a free account.

It’s how blogging works.. You notice something happening, you blog about it (using as a post title a key phrase you KNOW people are going to be searching) – result, lots of people visit.

People like me are how Spotify set out to market their product. It’s a good case study in social media marketing.

The only thing missing from the whole dealio is me making some money – doh. Notice no AdSense ads (I HATE ‘em)

I’m doing it because it’s a fun product and because it’s fun to give something away that people want.

Great to see the internet being used for something worthwhile and community-oriented. It’s all about the music. The more new stuff we hear, the more we support artists and buy. If only the record companies would realise that we’re not all out to scam freebies.

I just heard about Spotify, and it seems totally awesome! One of my friends showed it to me, he got his invite from his brother who’s a premium member.

I would become a premium member, the problem is just that as a poor student, it’s not possible. If there are any invites left over, I’d be forever greatful to get one!

It’s great fun just giving things away that people want. And the fact that even the free Spotify is so good to use.

Two things, though. One. It’s still a silly name (then again, so is mukaumedia). Two. I live in dread that once millions of us are using the free version, they’ll increase the ad levels until we’re forced to upgrade or pull out.

Only the Spotify people will know their revenue model… but I hope it’s not as I’ve imagined.

Paul, it’s all about licensing of music and if it’s not supported in your country, then I don’t think there’s any way you can do it.

Check with Spotify http://www.spotify.com – but there are lots of places worldwide it won’t work for legal reasons.

To clarify my previous comment- I went to the site and entered my email address to register an interest in Spotify but was then immediately redirected to the download page. Maybe it’s random and I was lucky or maybe they’re widening it’s distribution.

No problem – I’m already a happy Spotify user (since before Christmas). I just blogged postively about it and Spotify gave me loads of invites to give out which I do just for fun.

All part of their marketing strategy at that time.

If people can get on nowadays without an invite, that’s great. Some people seem to be able to, some can’t.

I’m happy to pass on invites as long as I’ve got some and Spotify want to distribute that way.

It has been fun helping people get Spotifying… I so enjoy cooking supper with ’50s Jazz that I would never buy playing…

All I did was post in such a way as to get my post to the top of Google.

Why? Partly because I enjoyed getting invited to Spotify and partly because it demonstrates what I help people and businesses do: use ordinary blogs (like this) to cleverly target and hit the top of Google.

As you can see, I don’t have advertising here – so the value to me is that this is a great ‘case study’. 2000 extra hits a week from a single post.

Guys I wish I could help out – but Spotify have paused their invitation marketing for now. Thanks for coming by and good luck finding a code.

Don’t forget too that sometime, they’ve got to get people signed up to the paid service, so they have to have a) a limit on the free ones and b) a good reason why people should sign up and pay.

Even though I can’t give out any more I also can’t stop people finding this post and asking.

Hi Camilla, yes I do read these – sadly, Spotify stopped giving out invites a while back so I’m not able to help out although I was able to set up 600 people with Spotify accounts earlier in the year.

Hmm. Understand how you feel – but it worked for Spotify. I gave out over 600 invites earlier this year to 600 happy people but they stopped passing them through me ages ago. Far from being marketing bullshit, I think it was quite a smart way for them to use bloggers like me to promote the service for them.

I haven’t checked recently if you can/can’t get invites from Spotify any more. Hope you got one if you were looking for one

Hi Theo – like I said before, I had 600+ invites to give out earlier this year but then Spotify changed their approach and stopped passing them through me – which means a lot of hopeful people come to this site now and get disappointed. Still, I hope you do get one somewhere.

If not, you could try out the premium service (for £9.99), invite a few people yourself (including yourself) then stop the service. I think you only pay month by month.

So you could get your invite (plus a few for your friends) for £9.99. You never know, you might even stay on as a paying subscriber. I’m going to give the paid service a go in a couple of weeks and will report whether it feels like good value or not.
