Actually you have missed two essential points.
1.Upgrades are there to create chaos and in its wake sell solutions to that chaos.
2.Techies are worse than DIYers they love changing things because they can.

My recommendations are as follows;
1.Have a National Holiday because it is good and we can all bond over upgrades.

2.Fit electronic prods to the designers so that we can register our disapproval via a few watts.
